By Charles W. Hubbard on May 26, 2012
I recently bought this holdfast together with its 4 1/2" counterpart (4 1/2" Achieve BENCH HOLD-Lower CLAMP - JORGENSEN # 1708) to be used on my small new workbench. for me personally, this clamp is completely unacceptable, and I do not plan for doing things. Passing on one star could be unfair, since the clamp works as marketed. It features a nice powder coat finish, and You can easily set and release having a only a single, appropriately directed firm tap from the rubber hammer. My greatest complaint relating to this clamp would be that the vertical publish includes a hexagonal mix-section, and the angles from the hexagon dig into and damage the edges of my 3/4" diameter bench dog holes considerably. It ought to be understood that my bench top is made of three bits of common 3/4" exterior A-C plywood laminated plus a 3/16" bit of masonite on the top to create the job surface. Plywood is clearly quite soft. a thick, hardwood top may endure easier to the hexagonal mix-portion of the vertical publish than my bench does. for me personally, the harm caused by using this holdfast within my bench dog holes causes it to be unusable. your milage can vary.
The 4 1/2" form of this clamp is really a different story. It features a vertical publish having a circular mix-section, seems to take less force to properly set (that we suppose is not surprising), and does not damage my bench dog holes. It sets and releases fast and dependably, and works spectacularly on wood up to around 2 inches thick (I would not recommend it for wood over 2 "). Some 1/2" version will get 5 stars in my opinion.Comment Was this review useful for you? Yes No Delivering feedback... Appreciate your feedback. If the review is inappropriate, Please tell us. They're pretty big and Heavy, and will most likely hold lower a log. Better possess a large work bench having a thick the top to the begin using these, and be ready to drill 11/16" holes for their services. That odd size boring bit can cost you greater than the clamp, if you do not curently have one.Comment Was this review useful for you? Yes No Delivering feedback... By Kimberly M. Allain on October 5, 2014 This can be a useless bit of iron over a koontz style holdfast or perhaps a gramercy holdfast. I built a work bench from 4 inch thick walnut with 3/4 inch holes and I can not have this holdfast to carry anything. If only I'd never got it.Comment Was this review useful for you? By catychaty on October 10, 2014 It required some time to learn how to utilize it but it really works fine now. A tap in a thirty degree position right in front having a rubber hammer works. Some occasions I must tap it a few occasions to have it right. Basically hit it way too hard it bounces and does not stick. It is a handy tool.Comment Was this review useful for you?
