By James S. on May 11, 2015
Pros : Really Fast, Small, motherboard attached, and bleeding edge tech. Boots on Asus X99-E WS and runs just like a scalded Ape. It required a long time to work through but it makes it worth while.
This drive is definitely an OEM laptop drive but could be set up in Desktops using the latest PCIe 3.m.2and UEFI support.
Cons : Samsung OEM product, not offered as retail so Samsung offers little no support so you need pretty advanced skills to get this run as Home windows boot drive. do not buy this and expect so that it is plug and play.
Other Thoughts : The SM951 will not show in Asus x99 BIOS as boot drive when first attached. But it'll show in BIOS once you have sucessfully installed Home windows onto it so have patience. You will notice it throughout the home windows install when you're motivated to decide on the drive place for your brand-new Home windows install but you can find a mistake message that Home windows can't install onto it. I attempted many occasions and unsuccessful at this time.
The trick for me (away from the guides) ended up being to first attach the SM951 towards the MB plus a proven boot drive with Home windows 8.1. Then boot the machine using the proven Home windows 8.1 install. Then use Windows Disk Management to initialize the SM951 as GPT (or become GPT if MBR exists). Recall the SM951 and the USB boot drive have to be GPT and UEFI. Now install Home windows 8.1 to the SM951 from a bootable USB (GPT + UEFI) Home windows 8.1 ISO made by Rufus or Windows Bootable Image Creator (see guides below). To ensure that Home windows to set up at this time the SM951 must show as unallocated space. When you get a mistake trying to decide on the SM951 as disk only use ADVANCED to delete the amount around the sm951 and it'll show as unallocated space. First knowledge about this drive with an Asrock Z97 Extreme 9.
Computer would publish and attempt as well, when booting from the USB home windows install media it might begin to see the drive but wouldn't allow installation onto this drive because of "Firmware issue that stops home windows from booting out of this drive".
When entering the bios to pick it as being a bootable drive, the bios would lockup in a black screen having a white-colored pointer. one in five bootups I possibly could enter into the bios, but would not recognize the drive in either M2 slot on this board (the 2x or even the 4x).
I began with bios version 1.14 and upgraded to at least one.30 to try and fix the problem with no success.
This drive is an upgrade replacement to an XP941 M2 pcie SSD thats the same size (256GB), and so i know both M2 slots will work perfect.
The drive I received has firmware BXW2500Q 2015.03 but appears pretty much DOA. I can not find anywhere online to download upgrading or downgrade firmware of these drives.
update: received a beta bios from Asrock and the SSD is functioning now (without uefi support though) but a minimum of I understand it is a bios issue and not really a hardware issue.1 Comment Was this review useful for you? I simply got this SM951 yesterday. It provided some challenges to set up it within an Asrock Z97 Extreme6 but I labored through them. The Ramcity help page onto it was particularly helpful. I'm running Home windows 10 onto it - installed from USB produced in the ISO. I'd some confusion about certain combinations, you have to use a minimum of Bios version 5.04 - I've found this version to become more stable compared to newest version 5.10. Getting the best bios is going to be crucial for any motherboard by having an ultra m.2 slot. It installed Home windows 10 in under ten minutes. I in addition have a Samsung 850 Pro 256GB ssd set up in this computer with 16Gb of G.Skill DDR3 2400mhz ram and an I5 4690k. The SM951 has outstanding speed, using Samsung Magician V4.6 to determine speed from the 850 Pro we've this: SM951 consecutive read 2234 mb/s, write 1240mb/s, random read iops 118428, random write iops 90444. The Samsung 850 Pro answers are: consecutive read mb/s 563, consecutive write mb/s 527, random read iops 97647, random write iops 88857. This Ultra M.2 is not just a little faster! You do not really notice it around the desktop because things are immediate.
Incidentally the startup time on Home windows 10 using the Bios hardware startup set to ultra fast is blazing, you receive a desktop in three or four seconds. I am not overclocked at all (yet).Comment Was this review useful for you? Yes No Delivering feedback... Appreciate your feedback. If the review is inappropriate, Please tell us. By PoloGuy on April 10, 2015 Anybody who claims the XP941 may be the fastest SSD on the planet is either ignorant or laying.
You need to be aware these sticks are equipped for laptop use. Based on reviews it requires the SM951 under two minutes of sustained conntacting achieve its thermal limit, and start throttling itself to 75MB/s. Again it's no problem for laptops simply because they aren't likely to handle that sort of information throughput, but I believe video editors and others who're eyeing these for desktop/workstation applications have been in for any rude surprise. I believe it is just dependent on time before we begin seeing heat spreaders and other thermal protections for M.2. Still, individuals first couple of minutes are sufficient as well any OS or application, and the sensible performance gains continue to be epic.6 Comments Was this review useful for you?
